Labor Member for McMahon Chris Bowen has announced that a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will support the dedicated Māori Cultural Centre and Marae in Western Sydney.
The $1 million election commitment will contribute to this transformative project totalling $18 million. It is being managed by the Sydney Marae Alliance, which has been a strong and respected part of South Western Sydney for many years.
The Cultural Centre will be a dedicated space in the heart of South West Sydney for traditional ceremonies, festivals, exhibitions and cutting-edge education programs to encourage youth engagement. It will also host multicultural exchanges to celebrate the richness of Māori culture.
Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.
Quotes attributable to Member for McMahon Chris Bowen MP:
“Community elders have been discussing the vision of a Marare Cultural Centre in Sydney since 1992 and it is an honour to be able to help realise that vision.
“Australia is home to more than 180,000 Māori and the same again for Pacific Peoples. As important neighbours we want to help deliver a dedicated facility where that community can come together to celebrate and share their culture.
“Building this facility in Greystanes is expected to benefit not just our Māori community, but the broader community of Western Sydney and McMahon, bringing new jobs and more than $8 million of economic uplift to the area every year.”
