Verity Firth

Verity Firth is Labor's candidate for Balmain in the 2015 State Election.

About Verity

I’ve lived in Glebe since I was 12 and still live here with my husband and 2 children.   I love our local area, our heritage buildings and natural beauty, as well as our diversity and progressive social values.

I believe we live in a unique part of the world, and when I was Member for Balmain from 2007 – 2011, I fought hard to make sure it stayed that way.

I also made sure that I did not waste a single day in government. Every day I fought to achieve reform for the people I represented.

As a Minister I introduced ‘Ethics’ classes into NSW Public Schools as an alternative to Scripture; delivered record funding increases to disadvantaged public schools; secured same-sex adoption legislation in NSW; provided greater funding and priority to domestic violence relief and support; and enhanced the state Government’s response to climate change.

As the local member for Balmain, I secured the funding and approval for the light rail extension to Dulwich Hill; preserved Callan Park for community use by transferring control from the state government to Leichhardt Council; delivered historic levels of funding for upgrades and repairs of local public housing; and saved Glebe Island Bridge from demolition.

What I stand for:

As a working parent in our area, I know it’s often the small issues that are the most important to our daily lives– knowing I can take my kids to a nearby park to play in, having access to high quality childcare and afterschool care without a long waiting list, and being able to use a high quality integrated public transport system to and from work.

But I also stand for addressing the big picture issue that affect us all:

I stand for:

  • A socially responsible economic agenda - promoting jobs and educational opportunity as a means of addressing inequality;
  • Real action on climate change and a focus on environmental policy;
  • Supporting public services such as education and health;
  • Restoring Labor’s moral compass by championing equality and human rights including rights for asylum seekers, marriage equality and a focus on the plague of domestic violence.
