Helen was elected to NSW Legislative Council in March 2007. She is Chair of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Health Care Complaints Commission. Helen was awarded the The Member of the Order of Australia in 2006 for service to local government through promoting sustainable environmental management, to the community through the Lebanese Women's Association and the provision of services to people with disabilities. Helen was also awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001 for service to Local Government. Helen served as Mayor of Bankstown from September 2002 to May 2006 and as Deputy Mayor from September 1997 to September 1998.
She was elected to Bankstown Council in September 1995 and re-elected in September 1999 and March 2004. Prior to her election to Parliament, Helen was a Director on the Board of Waste Service New South Wales, a position she held from 1996 to 2007. She was a member of the Executive of the NSW Local Government Association since November 2000 and a board member of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) since September 2001 and Chair from 2004 to 2005.
Previously, Helen has worked in the community services sector, in women’s health, disability services and neighbourhood centre coordination. She has also been employed as an Electorate Officer to State MPs and a Federal Senator.
Helen has been a member of the Australian Labor Party since 1976.
