John Robertson pays tribute to Her Excellency Governor Marie Bashir

Today our Parliament gathers in extraordinary circumstances.

It is a historic and exceptional day when both chambers pause their own proceedings to honour a great Australian.

The departure of Her Excellency The Honourable Professor Dame Marie Bashir – after 13 and a half years of outstanding service as Governor of NSW – is the end of an era.

It is truly a watershed in the life of our State.

The End of Universal Healthcare

Last night, the Abbott Government revealed it would introduce a Sick Tax, and thereby end universal healthcare in Australia. 

For decades, Labor has fought for healthcare to be the right of all Australians. 

There are a few things you can do to help us fight for Medicare. Sign the petition against the tax, volunteer to phone Liberal electorates and donate to the Medicare fund.

Neville Wran: a great Labor lawyer

As the tributes flood in for Neville Wran, a great Labor Leader, it pays to remember that Neville Wran was also a great Labor Lawyer. The two facts are not disconnected. 

Before Wran entered parliament he was a senior barrister – a QC no less – with twenty years of legal experience. He was known around the Sydney bar for his prodigious work ethic and his incredible attention to detail.

Balmain residents turn up in record numbers to select Labor's candidate

Over ten percent of the electorate of Balmain has voted in the Community Preselection to select Labor’s candidate for next year’s state election. At the close of polls on Saturday, Verity Firth won the ballot with 65 per cent of the community vote and 53 per cent of the branch vote.

Rodney Cavalier: Neville Wran has passed from our midst

On Good Friday very late a family member rang to say that the end of Neville Wran's life was nigh. We needed to prepare ourselves for what needed doing. It was a very long conversation.

Tonight Bob Carr rang me to say it was over.

You will have woken to the news if you did not hear this night. In this memo I do not intend to repeat the fine words being written and spoken elsewhere, or to list the considerable achievements of the Wran era.
